The German Ministry for Economic Corporation and Development, via financial institution the Development Bank of Southern Africa, has announced that it will fund the deployment of renewable energy for South Africa’s Gautrain rail system.
With the project expected to commence in 2023, the government of South Africa has issued a request for proposals – the deadline of which is set for March 28, 2022 – for the recruitment of consultants to strategize the deployment.
The Gautrain network – operating for over a decade and used by over 18 million commuters annually – aims to reduce carbon emissions through the utilization of green energy, in particular solar.
Gautrain Management Agency (GMA) CEO, William Dachs, noted that two predominant areas are being targeted for renewable deployment, namely, the train itself and its facilities. Through the adoption of solar, the GMA aims to ensure a reliable, clean power supply for years to come.
