French oil and gas company TotalEnergies is currently holding strategic discussions with its South African partners and the government to formulate a plan for the accelerated development of the company’s gas discoveries in South Africa.
In 2019, TotalEnergies made a sizeable discovery offshore South Africa, revealing 57 meters of net gas condensate pay in Lower Cretaceous reservoirs on the Brulpadda prospect on Block 11B/12B. The French major is eager to accelerate the development of this oil and gas find and is working collaboratively with its partners to chart the best way forward in this regard.
The company successfully commenced drilling despite strong ocean currents. What comes next is the Final Investment Decision, which the French major is eager to finalize as soon as possible so that development can proceed.
Project partner Africa Oil Corp – a Canadian based oil and gas firm – hopes to see a phased development of Block 11B/12B with first production aimed for 2027. The project will supply state-owned oil company PetroSA’s 45,000 barrel per day refinery in Mossel Bay, whereby gas will be processed both for liquid and power purposes.
The project will advance South Africa’s energy transition efforts, increasing the share of gas in the country’s energy mix, while improving fuel-production capacity.
