Nigeria has kicked off exploration in the Middle Benue Trough in the Obi Local Government Area of Nasarawa State with the drilling of the Ebenyi-A well.

The country’s national oil company, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), is spearheading the exploration campaign as part of efforts to increase production nationwide.

The drilling of the well follows the discovery of commercial quantities of oil found in the Kolmani River oilfield in Nasarawa State in November 2022 by the NNPC.

“The drilling of the well will lead to greater prosperity for all Nigerians and enhance overall energy security for the country,” Nigerian President Muhammad Buhari said during the official inauguration ceremony on Tuesday.

The President added that, “This is consistent with the commercial discoveries of hydrocarbons in the Kolmani Area of the Upper Benue Trough. I am pleased to note that activities are ongoing to develop the Kolmani petroleum discoveries to commercial production to add to the nation’s considerable hydrocarbon assets.”
