Oslo-based exploration firm Aker Energy announced successful results after a drilling campaign in the Pecan South-1A well, part of the Deepwater Tano Cape Three Points (DWT/CTP) Block, offshore Ghana.
The well is located south of the main Pecan field in the DWT/CTP block, for which Aker Energy is the operator. The discovery, estimated at 450-550 million barrels of oil equivalent (mmboe), will be added to the gross contingent resources from existing discoveries in the same area. Further analysis is currently ongoing and the company will commence sidetrack drilling in order to confirm initial findings and determine recoverable volumes.
Chief Executive Officer of Aker Energy, Jan Arve Haugan, announced: “We are pleased to [report] another successful well as the operator of the DWT/CTP block. The drilling result is another confirmation of the geological model for the area. The discovered resources from the well will further strengthen the robustness of the Pecan field development. We will now continue the appraisal drilling campaign, while finalizing the Plan of Development to be submitted by the end of March.”
These findings will strengthen the company’s development plan for the area, in which it estimates the potential of recoverable resources could reach between 600 and 1,000 mmboe in total.
Following the sidetrack drilling in Pecan South, drillship Maersk Viking will move to Pecan South East to drill a third well as part of the ongoing appraisal campaign.
Aker Energy has identified multiple target wells to be drilled as part of their greater strategy to develop the area. During a statement of discovery earlier this year, Haugan expressed how the company sees significant potential in offshore Ghana and is looking forward to developing the Ghanaian oil and gas industries.
Further, Haugan added: “Since we became the operator less than a year ago, we have established an open, inclusive and transparent collaboration with Ghanaian authorities. This partnership will enable us to unlock the vast potential in the area to the benefit of both the Ghanaian society and our license partners.”
Aker Energy is the operator of the DWT/CTP block with a 50% participating interest. Aker Energy’s partners are LUKOIL (38%), the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (10%) and Fueltrade (2%).
