The African Development Bank approved a $1.5 million grant for the 1GW Jigawa Independent Power Producer Solar Procurement Program, which will go towards the necessary technical and feasibility studies, as well as a design for a masterplan. Following the studies, the bank could also provide additional support and launch the competitive IPP procurement.
The Nigerian government has de-risked the project by providing land and transmission facilities, according to a AfDB press release.
“It is important for us to deliver a seamless implementation and provide necessary support to the government to conduct an effective IPP procurement process,” said Amadou Hott, the bank’s Vice-President for Power, Energy, Climate and Green Growth.
The 1GW power project will further Nigeria’s goals of achieving a renewable energy mix of 30 percent by 2030, as well as reaching 75 percent electricity access by 2020.
